It won't take listeners long to get hooked on narrator Heather Lind's interpretation of Kick Lannigan. Kick, now 21 years old, was kidnapped as a child and rescued from a child pornography ring five years later. Lind expertly weaves Kick's obsession with weapons and physical fitness as well as the continual flashbacks that are part of Kick's present-day life. Lind's control over the characters in Kick's circle--her publicity-seeking mother; her pretend brother, James; and even Mel, the kidnapper--is impeccable. John Bishop, Kick's new, mysterious friend, coerces her into helping him search for two recently kidnapped children. As Lind rips through their adventures, this audiobook crackles with the duo's fierceness to succeed. It all adds up to an engrossing beginning to this series and a daring performance by Lind. E.E.S. Kick Lannigan is a resilient woman—smart, tough, and a survivor. As a child, she was stolen from her family, abducted without a trace, then found years later. Although the experience understandably left her with a host of emotional problems, it drove her to learn self-defense strategies, including martial arts and marksmanship. Now Kick rescues kidnapped children, and she's desperately looking for a recently abducted child, hoping to find him alive. Lind excels in her portrayal of the charismatic heroine. Her jerky cadence reflects Kick's state of mind: always guarded and never quite willing to allow herself any weakness. Lind differentiates between the male and female characters by a subtle shift in tone; it may be barely perceptible, yet it makes such a difference. As the action increases, Lind's voice and the listener's heart rate gain speed, accentuating the suspense, as Kick closes in on the abductors. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.

In a break from her established series featuring serial killer Gretchen Lowell and Det. Archie Sheridan, Cain here launches a new thriller endeavor. Kick Lannigan is a recovering victim of childhood abduction and pornographic exploitation and acts with determination and a unique physical and emotional skill set to rescue other abducted children. Cain explores the emotional storms of the captive/captor relationship without delving too deeply into the dark details of child sexploitation. Actress Heather Lind brings a believable voice to the sometimes-strong/sometimes-vulnerable Kick. VERDICT Recommended for mystery and thriller collections, especially where Cain's other series is popular. ["Fans of psychological suspense and flawed characters will enjoy getting to know Kick," read the review of the S. & S. hc, LJ 5/1/14.]—Kristen L. Smith, Loras Coll. Lib., Dubuque, IA
