Browne, Robert. (Author).

Summary:

The eternal war between Heaven and Hell reaches a critical point that forces covert agent Bernadette Callahan and religious historian Batty LaLourie to race throughout the globe in search of ancient biblical codes to stop Satan's apocalyptic plot. Agent Bernadette Callahan is a talented investigator at a shadow government organization known only as Section, on the trail of a serial killer with nearly supernatural abilities. Sebastian LaLaurie is a religious historian who knows far too much about the other side - and that hard-earned knowledge is exactly what Callahan needs. This unlikely duo pairs up for a race across the globe, decoding clues left in ancient texts from the BIBLE to PARADISE LOST and beyond. In the process, they stumble upon a vast conspiracy - one beyond the scope of mankind's imagination. A thriller in the tradition of Dan Brown and Lincoln Child.

Ever since Satan got Adam and Eve thrown out of the Garden of Eden, he's been spoiling for the apocalypse. And it could be coming. Bernadette Callahan, an agent in a mysterious government organization, is trailing a serial killer with seemingly supernatural abilities (ahem) and must call on religious historian Sebastian "Batty" LaLaurie for help. Clues in their hunt come from the Bible and Milton's Paradise Lost. The publisher is quick to point out that film and foreign rights were sold on the basis of the idea alone, plus a writing sample, suggesting in-house hopefulness for this debut by screenwriter Browne.

An internationally adored Christian pop star, Gabriela Zuada has been found burned to death in Brazil. Sent in to investigate is U.S government agent Bernadette Callahan. Since Gabriela's death could possibly be related to the occult, a religious history expert is requested. On the edge of ruin after his wife's death, Sebastian "Batty" LaLaurie, religious scholar extraordinaire, finds himself helping Bernadette in a race to save humanity. The four fallen angels have been attacking humankind for centuries in their quest to release Satan from Hell and build their own version of paradise on Earth. With civil and political unrest, the fallen economy, and desperate situations worldwide, conditions to fulfill their plan have never been so ripe. Only the archangel Michael dares to help the human race fight against the evil. Lying within the pages of John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost, is the key to salvation, and Batty must decipher it or all will be lost. Verdict Screenwriter Browne's taut apocalyptic thriller combines the scholarly with the fantastical to create an absorbing tale of good and evil. Milton's Paradise Lost provides the backdrop for Browne's riveting, cinematic novel, which charts an epic battle between good and evil. When saint-like pop singer Gabriela Zuada is found burned to a crisp in her dressing room after a performance in São Paulo, Brazil, on the last night of her Glory Revealed World Tour, Bernadette Callahan, field agent for the top-secret government spy agency known as Section, investigates. After other horribly burned bodies surface, Milton scholar Sebastian "Batty" LaLaurie persuades Bernadette that Gabriela's demise is no ordinary murder. Indeed, Beelzebub, Belial, Moloch, and Mammon—a quartet of fallen angels who appropriate human "skins" as a disguise—are behind the deaths as well as an unholy plot to release Satan to rule over humankind. Only the archangel Michael and his band of puny but courageous humans can defeat the demons. The author, who also writes as Robert Gregory Browne (Down Among the Dead Men), offers consistently smart prose and an ending that points to future thrillers set in this fascinating world. (July)
